If you remember back to last fall, I made over my two story great room for the One Room Challenge and added these great built in shelves. You can see the room reveal here. Since adding these shelves I've really enjoyed styling them for each and every season! Today I'll be sharing some tips that help me style these shelves in a modern and minimalist way for the summer months.
The warmer months for me are a time to pare down and style my home in a casual way. I keep my decor airy and bright and opt for light and reflective accents when styling.
Tip 1: Keep It Simple
Keeping with the pared down theme for the summer, I always de-clutter my shelves and only showcase a few pieces. This gives my eyes a break and really makes things light and airy. Items that I always keep on my shelves are sentimental things such as family photographs, heirlooms or those that remind me of fond memories.
Tip 2: Keep It Consistent
Repeating similar decor items on the shelves is a nice way to keep the look of your shelves consistent. For example, cluster a group of vases together and opt for similar styles of photo frames and alternate the sizes. This will keep your shelves streamlined and will be visually appealing.
Tip 3: Stick To A Color Scheme
Floral stems are a great way to add visual interest to your shelves. I use them year round and alternate them depending on the season. In the summer, I typically opt for pops of white with some greenery to keep things neutral and fresh. No matter your choice of floral stem, choosing to use the same colors consistently on all of your shelves will allow your shelves to appear cohesive. The same goes for the color of your vases. Multiple colors of vases and flowers will make your shelves appear "busy" and may be visually overwhelming.
Tip 4: Mix and Match
The best styled shelves incorporate items of varying heights. Just like when styling a table, combing items of various shapes and sizes adds visual interest. Don't be afraid to use pedestals, books or stands to elevate the decor items on your shelves. It's a great way to add that extra oomph!
Tip 5: Add A Pop Of Fun!
Just because things are simplified for the summer doesn't mean they have to be boring! This year, I opted to use these pretty terrariums as vases and I am loving the look! These terrariums have battery operated fairy lights inside. They work for all the seasons (especially for the holidays!) and can be used indoors and out.
