One Room Challenge: Guest Bedroom & Bathroom Reveal!
Updated: Jun 25, 2021
The day is finally here! Welcome to the One Room Challenge Guest Bedroom & Bathroom reveal! The guest bedroom and bathroom transformation is finally complete and I am absolutely thrilled with the end result!
Like all One Room Challenges of the past, the last eight weeks have been filled with uncertainty, stress, excitement and a ton of sweat! I know I say this with every transformation, but this challenge is a TRUE challenge. Many of you may not know this, but I did not initially plan to makeover my guest bedroom and bathroom. I had planned to makeover my outdoor space as a featured designer for the One Room Challenge. I had a last minute change of plans and decided to pivot and I'm so glad that I did ... because the end result is spectacular!
This guest bedroom and bathroom makeover was primarily DIY. The accent wall in the guest bedroom was a HUGE undertaking. It involved cutting oh-so-thin plywood into various sizes, three coats of stain, a coat of polycrylic and then careful application to the wall so that all the individual pieces fit together. You could say it is one large jigsaw puzzle! I seriously questioned my sanity numerous times when working on this wall. But now that it's all said and done, I can honestly say I love the accent wall and what it adds to the space. Like I really really LOVE IT. I feel like I finally have a space for my guests that I am proud of!
Before I jump into the guest bedroom and bathroom reveal, let's take a look back at where we started .....
I am so happy to have the guest bedroom and bathroom of my dreams - come on in ....
WHAT. AN. UPGRADE! I'm so pleased with how both spaces turned out and I can't wait to delve into the details below. The truth is that my guest bedroom and bath were not in the worst shape but they were far from what I had envisioned and it was certainly time for change. The bedroom wall color was a boring white and while I tried to refresh it over the years by adding some wall art and throw pillows, the space still lacked personality. The bathroom was really builder grade with a basic mirror, faucet and a light fixture that I thought was cool when we initially built our home. Needless to say, all the individual details of this transformation came together seamlessly to create a modern, sophisticated guest bedroom and ensuite ... it's hard to believe the change that took place over eight weeks!
Let's talk design ....
Millwork and Accent Wall
This crown moulding and accent wall was so transformative for both spaces. The gray-black rich wood tones and the texture were exactly what this room needed to make the large back wall pop. The accent wall definitely complemented the remaining elements in the room including the lighting, rug, furniture, art and accessories. I opted to highlight the crown moulding from Ornamental Moulding by painting it a darker gray when compared to the walls. The folks at Kelly Moore paint helped me pick two complementary gray colors with violet undertones that would work well with the richest black tone possible. I painted the room myself and let me tell you, the quality of this paint is TOP NOTCH! I'm a total amateur when it comes to paint, but I really enjoyed the painting process ... this paint was so easy to use!
The moulding was a breeze to put up (as per my contractor!) and really packed a great modern punch. Ornamental Moulding carries a variety of options from interior millwork and beams, be sure to check them out!
The showstopper in the bedroom may have been the accent wall, but the all-white herringbone wallpaper in the bathroom definitely takes the cake. This wallcovering is from York Wallcoverings in collaboration with Calico Corners and it is absolutely breathtaking. The texture is just divine and adds so much depth to the bathroom. This woven wallpaper is extremely delicate, so I had my trusted wallpaper ladies come and apply it to all three walls of the bathroom. I love the way the light bounces off each stroke of the herringbone pattern for a perfectly sophisticated look.
Lighting and Ceiling Fan
Another key feature in both rooms is lighting and ceiling fan. Like the cherry on a sundae, both the vanity light and the oversized table lamps are the perfect finishing touches to the guest bedroom and bath. Not only do these pieces provide excellent function for overhead lighting and reading, they also make a statement. The lighting fixtures in both the bathroom and bedroom are from Hudson Valley Lighting. Since the accent wall and the crown moulding were dark and bold, I decided to keep things soft by using transparent glass light fixtures.
If you have followed my on Instagram (@thisissimplicite) or have been reading my blog for a while, you will know that I love the single blade ceiling fan from Kichler Lighting. I have this fan in both my master bedroom and great room (both of these spaces were previous One Room Challenge makeovers ... surprise surprise!). I was delighted to put this ceiling fan in my guest room without any hesitation.
Drapery and Textiles
By now I'm sure you will notice that most of the design elements in the guest bedroom are very masculine. To complement this, I added some soft feminine touches by choosing lighter fabrics in the form of drapes and bedding. Again, to keep things light, I chose an acrylic curtain rod with chrome end caps and crisp linen all white drapes from Calico Corners. Did you know they carry quick ship drapes that can be created custom to your windows? They were a dream to work with and they helped me create a little seating nook moment by the window.
I once read a quote that said "pillows are stuffed animals for adults" and this describes me to a T. No bedroom is complete without an abundance of pillows styled on the bed ... am I right? I had to showcase the beautiful pillows from SWD Studio. I opted for a combination of grays and blush pink for this space and I think the color scheme worked beautifully! The pillow selection at SWD Studio is incredible, it was so hard to just pick a few. They are also very well made - I can see myself using these for many years to come!
Art & Accessories
I say this every time I makeover a space, but the accessories in a room can make such a huge impact. For the guest bedroom, I opted for a few pieces of art but wanted them to take center stage. The nightstands were dressed with pink, black and white overized abstract art from Virginia Beshears and Minted. These pieces work really well in a modern space and are perfect for layering to draw your eye to my nightstands.
Is there anything prettier than a Jill Rosenwald bowl filled with pink and white hydrangeas? This custom made, gold-rimmed, hand painted bowl was the perfect decorative addition to the bench I added by the windowsill. I love the whimsical design and I can see this bowl being used season after season in this room.
I know the guest bedroom is filled with decorative accents, but I didn't forget to add a decorative piece to the bathroom. Have you noticed the faucet? I was immediately drawn to the beautiful shape and profile of the Massaud faucet by AXOR and I HAD to have it in my guest bathroom. The chrome mirror from Varaluz added the perfect amount of glam to this guest bathroom. This mirror was very easy to install and provides a crystal clear reflection of this stunning bathroom.
Well there you have it folks! The guest bedroom and bathroom in all of it's glory! I hope you enjoyed this One Room Challenge reveal. Every time I walk into this space I cannot help but smile - the work that went into this space was well worth it!
